My Story
I am the parent of three children who suffered vaccine reactions. My first suffered severe swelling of her leg (it swelled to over twice its size for several weeks), high fever, distress. Her pediatrician called it a vaccine reaction, and told me my daughter could no longer receive that particular vaccine (MMR). So this is what I thought vaccine reactions 'looked like'. My second child (my oldest son) suffered regression (he was taking steps, and had about a dozen words) after he was vaccinated, and he lost these skills overnight. At that time, I was going through a divorce, it was chalked up to that (again, I thought I knew what vaccine reactions looked like - and that was not it). My third child's reaction was severe and all-too obvious. At two months old when he went in for his well-visit, he was social, babbling, smiling, tracking objects, reaching, rolling over. His pediatrician remarked that his development was 'ahead of the curve.' He had his vaccines and all hell broke loose. On the way home from the pediatrician's office, he fell into a deep sleep, and stayed sleeping for the next 12 hours - he wouldn't wake long enough to even nurse for more than a few sips at a time. Then around 1:00 am, he woke up screaming a high-pitched loud scream, unlike any I had ever heard before! I came from a large family, and had run a day care, so I had a lot of experience with infants - yet this screaming was entirely new to me! He was arching his back, and rolling his eyes. It was frightening! I called his doctor, and she said it was a vaccine reaction, but not to worry, it was "normal." The screaming continued for 72 hours without stopping for longer than four minutes at a time to sleep or nurse (we timed it). At 24 hours in, the diarrhea began (he still suffers from GI issues 14 years later). It was mucousy and so acidic, his bottom instantly started to bleed. He ended up on prescription diaper cream for the rest of his diaper days. He broke out with eczema within an hour or so after the diarrhea began (an auto-immune condition). He still gets that as well, and he gets it everywhere on his body, from the soles of his feet to his scalp and everywhere in between. The worst of course, was the neurological damage. When the screaming stopped, all his milestones, his smiles, his social awareness, was gone. He was a different baby. He remained very difficult to soothe. He was extremely irritable, always crying. It took several months before we saw another - fleeting - smile from him. At his two month appointment, his pediatrician had said he was advanced for his age. At three months, she worried that he was behind. By four months, he was labeled Developmentally Delayed. At five months, Early Intervention was called in. By 8 months, they were talking autism. His formal diagnosis came just before his fourth birthday (we knew well before then, but waited for the formal diagnosis as it was not needed until he was ready to start school). He has been involved in medical research studies for autism at some of the best hospitals and colleges in Boston. As part of one (a long-term, multi-part study) he has been examined by a researcher, who is also a medical professor at Harvard, a neurologist, and neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston who specializes in autism - in other words - she knows her stuff! After examining my son (for over an hour) and meeting with me, getting his history, she explained to me that my son has a mitochondrial dysfunction as well as dysautonomia (these were later confirmed by the appropriate specialists in their respective fields), and that his autism, eczema, and GI issues are all a direct result of his not being able to tolerate the vaccines he had at two months old (He had not received anymore after that injury, even though his former pediatrician - I fired her shortly after - refused to exempt him on medical grounds, and wanted to continue to vaccinate him!) Today my son suffers from high-functioning autism. It has been confirmed that his condition would be much more severe had we continued vaccinating my son. He has low muscle tone, eczema, GI issues, difficulty with small motor and gross motor skills, Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Depression, and speech issues. He has (fortunately) overcome Tourettes Syndrome.
